Yesterday I was reflecting on the delicate deference extended to the feelings of Muslims in Britain. Mustn’t upset them, lest they do all jihadi on you.

In Scotland, the National Health Service told workers not to eat at their desks during Ramadan so they won’t offend fasting Muslims. The new PM, Gordon Brown, instructed his government not to use the word Muslim to describe the terror attacks by Muslims. And one town forbade employees from putting stuffed Piglet characters on their desks, lest some Muslims might be offended at the sight of unclean pigs.

But what about the feelings of Catholics? When I first saw this bit from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life, I had three thoughts: a) they could never get away with that in the US and b) British Catholics must be mighty offended and c) damn, that’s funny.

Nevertheless, the nation survived even with rankled Catholics. But now, the rules have changed, seemingly just for Muslims, who cannot abide any mockery of their beliefs. Instead of telling certain Muslims to grow up and tolerate criticism, like civilized folks, the Brits are committing cultural suicide.
